Alcohol and Fat Burning

Well, Saturday is here, and I know most of us will be heading out with friends for a few drinks this weekend. For those of us that are trying to shed some pounds, we know we can have a few drinks here and there, and still meet our fat loss goals, but what most of us do not know, is how it really affects our bodies, and that it can actually prohibit our bodies from burning fat.

What is Considered 1 Drink? Research considers an alcoholic drink to be about 15 grams of ethanol alcohol. 15 grams of alcohol is found in a 5 ounce glass of wine, a 12 ounce beer, and 1.5 fluid ounces of hard alcohol. So that wine glass at dinner, usually equals 2 drinks! WOW! Doesn't that stink? Yup, it's the truth!

Alcohol and Fat Loss: Your body works really hard to process alcohol when it is ingested, this means your body will signifigantly stop fat-burning close to 75%, just after 1.5 drinks. Although less than 5% of the alcohol will get stored as fat, the food you are eating is more likely to be stored as fat. Furthermore, once your body stops the fat-burning process, it takes 3 days for it to get back there. So before you cheers, know your limits and enjoy in small amounts!

But wait, aren't there some benefits to drinking alcohol? The answer is YES, but only when consumed in moderation, (think one time per week, 1-2 drinks).Research has shown that women who drink moderately have a slightly lover BMI as those who don't drink, but the same effect is not seen in men. Those who moderately drink are at less risk of dying from heart disease and cancer, while decreasing one's risk of Altzheimer's, and even slightly improving your immune system.

In other words, complete abstinence may not be needed while trying to lose fat as long as it is done in moderation, and not very often. If you don't drink, then obviously don't start, but if you want to have a couple of drinks on the weekend, there is nothing wrong with having one or two! YAY!
